This February, Edinburgh based Artist Christine Clark launches her new workshops which will give you the chance to engulf yourself in the world of fashion, art and life drawing.

The inaugural course is called FUSED and begins with a stunning fashion installation combining fashion garments from designer Judy R Clark with an eclectic mix of shoes, lamps, fabrics, found objects, photographs and ornate clothing to provide an exciting space for the Life Model and participants to work from.

The course commences the 25th and 26th of February at Wasp Studios on Dalry Road. Spaces are limited and cost £60 for the day.

Just thought I would share the Clark Coat product shot with you, she is a beauty. Currently hanging in my studio the temptation to wear her is unbelievable. It must be kept pristine for the all important buyer at PURE so my swagger into town wearing my new coat will have to wait!

A Brand is Born! Spencer Collection - A/W 2012/13.

The past few months have been non stop! Spencer clothing has taken a lot of work but I am enjoying the process immensely. From being appointed designer to choosing our own brand name the journey has been fast paced to say the least.It all started with a phone call from Mr Gilchrist and we haven't looked back. The company/manufacturer were looking for new brand manager/marketing expert to work with an innovative fashion designer so with a lot of work Spencer Clothing was born.

Designs, fabrics, manufacturer, flights, samples, modelling, photoshoots, marketing..the whole project is continuous,just as it should be. Working on the collection together has been fantastic and has been a great way to project Spencer Clothing into the spotlight.

Exciting news, I have been appointed designer for new clothing label SPENCER. Colin Gilchrist from The Social Tailor and I have been working hard over the last few months to produce this new womenswsear label and are shooting the collection on Tuesday!

Our model is the beautiful Anna Freemantle who will be photographed by Reuben Paris. Bloggers are invited to attend the shoot and have a piece of the collection named after them. You can read more about this at you shiny new blog SPENCER CLOTHING.

I am currently writing from our manufacturer where I am watching the samples come of the line. What a team; the skilled workers produce garments for the likes of Karen Millen and Coast, they are the magicians of the industry! The new coat I have designed is just being finished off as I type and it is gorgeous. I want one already so keep your eyes peeled as we unveil images in due course.

We are heading to PURE London between the 12^th -14^th of February. Our stand is in the main hall towards the back on the left hand side in the STUDIO section in a 20 square metre stand numbered: M102. So if you are attending please pop in to say hello!

My Ford Car Dress!

Challenge: Make a dress out of car parts for Ford Motor Company.

Time limit: 1 Week

Materials: Various car parts from a Ford Focus, Tweed, Lace, Leather, Silk Chiffon, Spray-paint.

Process:

The parts arrived in two big boxes; I unpacked all the components which covered the studio floor. Game on! Car keys, radio players, dash board functions, rear lights, car seat covers, window buttons, lighter functions, circular gizmos and gadgets aplenty!

The back of the dress - the ‘engine' - comprises of all the small components stitched into a small crinoline type bustle.

The massive red rear lights were a bit of a challenge; I sawed of the back section with a hack saw to shed some bulk and weight, then drilled holes in top section attaching wire and kilt straps. so they could be clipped on and off. I attached the lights and the entire bustle to an industrial sized leather belt to carry the weight.

Using the cover of a car seat, HTH tweed and a bit of spray-paint leather and lace I constructed the biker jacket. My younger sister and I had a pair of pliers and a screwdriver in hand pulling bits apart to access the circuit boards and wires finding pieces that were a suitable sizes and weight to attach to the jacket. It’s a great shape with a sexy edge.The needle of the speedometer on the back moves round so yo can choose what speed to go at! Underneath the jacket a tweed, gauze and chiffon corset appliqued with copper wire nips in the waist.

I dyed layers of silk chiffon inspired by the colour of diesel, the fabric mimicking the flow of fuel. The contrast of feminine soft layers with that of industrial car mechanics was something I wanted to encapsulate.

Ford only asked for a dress but I could not resist making the whole outfit. Do you think Lady Gaga would be interested? One for her next video perhaps....

Open studios this weekend, the 1st and 2nd of October.

Come and have a nosey.. I have just been and some of the work is beautiful.

You can wander around the studios and see work from artist from various mediums. It’s not often you get to see 'behind the scenes' so get your skates on and who knows maybe pick up some art work. Plus there is plenty tea and cake!.

The studios are down the lane beside Good Seed Bistro on Dalry Road, make a day of it and stop in for some lunch.

Lara Platmans new book ‘From Land to Street’ is published to coincide with celebrations marking the centennial year of the Harris Tweed Orb. Lara spent a year with the farmers,mill workers, weavers and tailors to capture the essence of all that is Harris Tweed. The fashion pages feature the work of designers using the iconic fabric and I am happy to say Judy R Clark features alongside some of the worlds renowned fashion labels such as Vivienne Westwood and Paul Smith. The book is out now!

Conservation Couture - Jungle City

A few months ago I was approached by The Elephant Family to produce a Harris Tweed blanket as part of their Conservation Couture project fro Jungle City.The event celebrates the magnificence of Asia’s endangered wildlife, generating mass awareness of their plight and making everyone smile at the same time. It sees a herd of life-sized Asian elephants lead a community of brightly painted orangutans, hornbills, tigers and crocodiles through the streets, parks and buildings of the world’s most iconic cities with the aim of raising £50m over the next ten years for their survival.

Each life-sized elephants, which can be seen in Edinburgh, wears a completely unique and stunning blanket designed and produced by world class fashion houses that support The Survival Tour campaign.

The artwork below combines the work of myself and Alison Macleod of Tiger Textiles. Alison sent me some embroidered Harris Tweed panels embelished with the Gaelic language and old photos of people from the Island. You can see them at the top and bottom of the blanket. I then selected different panels of colourful Harris Tweeds and embroidered a few elephants, lace pieces and buttons to make a type of patchwork blanket.

My twin sister artist Christine Clark was also invited to paint a Hornbill, follow the link to see her with her bird. Her bird is situates at The National Museum of Scotland.

You can see 130 animal sculptures around Edinburgh City sprawled in parks, streets and in buildings. The blankets and animals will be sold at action to raise funds for Asia’s endangered spices towards the end of the month.

Frock Coat goes all French in Geo Magazine!

The Gaelic Frock Coat is certainly a firm favourite amongst fashion fans!Here the jacket features in the French edition on Geo Magazine. The article talks about the Centenary celebrations of the 100th year of the Harris Tweed Orb.

The picture also appeared in the German edition earlier this year.

A trio of Harris Tweed celebrates 'Wool Week' at Harvey Nichols.

Outfits include designs by my own label Judy R Clark alongside fellow Scottish designers Joyce Paton and Claire Hamilton. The garments represent a range of distinctive womenswear design using the iconic fabric.

I selected the Gaelic Frock Coat to be part of the presentation in store as it represents the diversity of the fabric,the frock coat feature's unique embroidery by Tiger Textiles and is one of my personal favourites. The frock coat has been showcased in New York, Japan, and Glasgow and we are very pleased to see it alongside some of the world's most exclusive fashion brands at Harvey Nichols.

The Harris Tweed display can be see on the 2nd floor womenswear department celebrating 'Wool Week' from the 5th-11th of September.

As part of the Best of Scotland campaign,celebrating the multi million pound retail investment, HTH have an exhibition which contributes to the celebration of all thing Scottish at Glasgow airport.

You can see my black Frock Coat with gold embroidered Orb on show alongside a few other designer using Harris Tweed Hebrides fabric.

The Harris Tweed Bike Ride

The Harris Tweed Bike Ride went down a storm on Sunday.The ride was in aid of the Linda Norgrove foundation. The rain poured down but we all made it to the end! An excellent day and lots of fun thanks to Mike.

Happy to have donated one of my tweed jackets to the event, I hope the Frenchman who bought it at the auction gets what he wanted from his other half....!

A Tale of Tweed - Urban Outfitters Showcase, Glasgow

Thursday went really well, great turn out, tasty cakes and some wine to help it all go down!

The exhibition includes my collection of Harris Tweed wears, fashion illustrations and items from around my studio which gives an insight into my design process. I shot some new pieces with photographer Anna Olszewska last week..check out the results in store!

Wall hangings from Tiger Textiles adorn the back wall showcasing Alison Macleod’s talents in free hand embroidery and print skills which you often see in our collaborative work. Alison and I have worked together over the past few years; we met at Nesta in 2008 and have since formed a great friendship and business rapport.

A little bit about or collaborative work.....

Alison Macloed sends me tweed panels embroidered with the Gaelic language telling stories which are inspired by her native Hebridean heritage, Gaelic culture and natural surroundings. Using this inspiration, Alison embroiders lengths of Harris Tweed with designs that compliment the traditional cloth. Through delicately stitching Gaelic songs and poems in the tweed, she is telling the story of where the cloth is from and promoting the culture in a modern way. She sends me her embroidered fabrics to Edinburgh to incorporate into my designs. We named our first collaboration ‘The Gaelic Frock Coat’

The Gaelic Frock Coat made it s debut at the Scottish Style Awards and has since traveled internationally gracing the catwalks of Japan for the ‘Tweed goes to Tokyo’ exhibition, New York at ‘Dressed to Kilt’ and also at ‘Sachs on Fifth Avenue’. The jacket also represented the winners of textile manufacturer of the year, Harris Tweed Hebrides, at the Scottish Fashion Awards at Stirling Castle.

I have made a number of frockcoats that feature Alison’s embroidery; they give the jackets more meaning, a different edge, people like to hear the journey about where the garments come from.

The back panel of the frock coat tells a story about a woman at a celiegh dancing in a petticoat with high heeled red shoes on. Alison has embroidered a poem in Gaelic through this very tactile piece she made from felt, tweed and vintage fabrics.

The jacket is also on display in Urban Outfitters.

Another successful year in NYC 2011!

We boarded the flight with much excitement; we could not wait to be back in New York City!

We kick started the adventure with a trip to the pop up shop to drop of our gear, followed by a 5am photo shoot the next day ,with photographer Gerardo Jaconelli, we took in the sights and dressed the models with the Textiles Scotland team, a very long day but well worth it!

Next day was fittings and chat back at pop up shop - it was the main base for setting up meetings and talking to other designers. Jan the stylist was upstairs dressing a host of famous faces who came through the door. I am rubbish at spotting a celeb but hey ho they were there never the less!

April 5^th came and the eve of Dressed to Kilt, the room was packed, there was a great atmosphere, lots of cheering and a few whistles as models sauntered down the catwalk.

Billy Connolly was first on stage followed by my own collection opening the show with a special Harris Tweed collection celebrating the Centenary of the world-famous Orb. Delighted!The collection featured Harris Tweed, velvets and vintage lace. The jackets also feature beautiful embroidery by my partner in crime Alison Macleod of Tiger Textiles. Her delicately embroidered panels are beautiful and make each piece so completely unique.

A host of celebs then strutted their stuff down the catwalk including Kiefer Sutherland, ‘Mr Big’ (Chris North) from Sex & The City and Brian Cox who all enjoyed showing a bit of ‘cheek’ on the runway! Paolo Nutini played an acoustic version of Caledonia, it was simply gorgeous!

The other Scottish designers who’s outfits graced the Manhattan catwalk included Glasgow label ten30, his new website has just launched! Alan digitally prints and embroiders his cloth making elegant womenswear clothing. He joined us for some good chat in Times Square and filled us in on his fashion conquest. Henrietta Ludgate, Haley Scanlon, Claire McInally, Di Gilpin, Strumpet and Pink , Kiltpin and Iona Crawford also strutted some stuff on the runway. It was a pleasure to meet some friendly faces in the Scottish fashion industry and celberate our culutre in true Scottish stlye.

Scottish Designers..

We all shared a space at this year’s pop up shop in the prestigious shopping area of Madison Avenue. The designer reception at the pop up on April 6^thwas fab, whisky cocktails flowed and canapés nibbled. The setup was clean and classical and enjoyed by all who attended.

A big thank you to Textiles Scotland and to Fiona and Stewart for all their hard graft, they made it a great evening and event for us all!

Tiger Textiles and I are heading to Dressed to Kilt tomorrow morning as part of the Scotland/Tartan week celebrations in New York City...we are a little bit excited!

The organisers were so enchanted by our designs from the previous year they have invited us back to showcase our new collection on the New York runway.

NYC here we come!!

Harris Tweed also have there own section on the runway this year so looking forward to seeing some of the selected designs form the Stronoway show on the catwalk!

Judy R Clark wins Jolomo Award!

I had the honour of meeting John Lowrie Morrison (Jolomo) last week at an awards ceremony organised by PSYBT. The afternoon comprised of a lovely lunch followed by a round of interviews and then the big prize giving. It was a nervous wait for all but well worth it, delighted to have won! Second and third place respectively went to Lauren Crawford who lives in fife and designs handwoven textiles and Dundee based silversmith Geena Delaney.

Jolomo and Judy

The Jolomo PSYBT Awards were launched in March 2008 with the help of a £10,000 donation from Jolomo to inspire more young people with arts and crafts backgrounds living in North West Scotland and the Highlands and Islands to set up their own businesses. This year the awards and the prize money were extended to include eligible arts and crafts businesses throughout the whole of Scotland.

The centenary year of the Harris Tweed Orb was celebrated in true style on March 12th . Alison Macleod and I co-managed the event with Lorna Macaulay to produce the event which showcased the best in British deign. It was a truly entertaining evening.

The showcase projected visuals about the history of the cloth featuring images by Ian Lawson and Carol Ann Peacock. The Laxdale ladies then took to the stage and preformed a 'walking song' followed by singer song writer Irene McTaggart. Irene was fantastic on the guitar in a live acoustic session!

Also featured in the show was 'The Big Reveal' where two of the cancer research workers Anne and Cathrine were game to strut there stuff down the catwalk after being made over by the hair and make up team. and adorned in harris tweed. They made over £800 during the evening kindly donated by audience members.

Now for the Catwalk.......

Henry Holland produced a show stopping collection featuring romper suits in bright purples, pinks and oranges with a hint of PVC. The designer’s range also includes silks digitally printed with a herringbone pattern that draped round the shoulders of his tailored multicoloured dresses. Alison and I could not resist trying on a couple of rompers. More photos will follow of this.(Tweedy the new puppy at the HTA chewed Alisons camera cable so will update soon!)

The Queen of fashion Dame Vivienne Westwood sent down a womens-wear tailored coat featuring over sized lapels in stripes of grey, blue and black from her autumn/ winter 2010 Prince Charming range. We were very pleased to have her new wears appear on the Stornoway catwalk.

Ben Shermans Classic Collection in traditional moss greens jackets, styled with retro braces was accompanied by a local West Highland Terrier who was also kitted out in a distinctive harris tweed coat.

Slanj produced a bespoke Harris Tweed contemporary kilt outfit for host, Fred MacAuly. Fred entertained audience in our afternoon and evening show then went on to do a killer stand up performance which led to much laughter and a few wines!

New Scottish fashion label Jaggy Nettle supplied a range of Harris Tweed High Tops and quirky cashmere jumpers which featured throughout the show. I really want the black 'Slag' jumper!

Three local designers Netty Sopata, Sally Avis and Laurie Stewart collaborated on a collection using hues of greys and blues; the range features exquisite kilts designed for the female form.

Iona Crawford made a four piece collection for the show in light coloured pastles lined with her illustraive silk prints.

New Glasgow fashion label Obscure Couture produced a one of a kind play suit in leather and black and white check. The ladies sent me some images of their new piece..check it out!

Fawns Reid, an Edinburgh based milliner, designed exclusive pieces incorporating the Harris Tweed orb into her head wear using gold, felt, feathers and of course Harris Tweed. She has her own unique signature style which finished of the outfits in dramatic style. (Her hats feature in most of these images.)

Irregular Choice provided the show with a beatuiful range of footwear, a big thank you to them for their kind sponsership.

Joyce Patons outfit closed the show, alongside Harris tweed in Knitwear. The finale featured two models being piped down the catwalk holding a golden harris tweed orb designed by Joyce symbolizing the homecoming of the orb.

100 years of the Harris Tweed Orb Catwalk Show

If you didn't know already Harris Tweed is celebrating the centenary year of the orb!

Alison Macloed of Tiger Textiles and I are co managing the fashion show with the chief executive of the Harris Tweed Authority Lorna Macaulay. We have been planning the event for the past few months now and cant wait to kick start the action on March 12th! The island will embrace the centenary year of the orb and all that is Harris Tweed!

We have a great range of British designers including Vivienne Westwood, Nigel Caborn, Henry Holland and top notch Scottish talent such as Joyce Paton, Iona Crawford and Deryck Walker.The ladies from Obscure Couture who are just back from London Fashion Week will also be producing a one off Harris Tweed outfit for the event in their own unique signature style! Local designers Netty Sopota, Laurie Stewart and Sally Jay Avis who are all natives of the Island are also collaborating in a range for the event.

The show will take place at An Lanntair Arts Centre on March 12th where Fred MacAuly will host an evening to remember; celebrating the centenary year and giving back to a community who have been producing the unique cloth for over one hundred years.

Gabby Young and some other Animals including Bright Young Brits!

Last week I had the pleasure of meeting Gabby Young, a fantastic musician who is hitting international headlines! We met at Gabby's agents house and were greeted by the most tasty croissants smothered in jam with endless cups of tea. I opened my suitcase of jackets and dresses and I think Gabby fell in love with each and every one of them; she shares my love of cuffs, collars and bustles so it was the perfect match!

'Dressing up' is an essential part of Gabby's stage presence. I had the pleasure of going to the Barbican to watch Gabby and the Other Animals perform - she has quite a crew! A ten pieces brass band, piano man, drummer, guitarist - the works!

A few weeks ago Gabby jetted of on her world tour, one of my frock coats packed in her suitcase and I hear it has been on a photshoot in Japan...nice work Gabby - I can not wait to see the pictures! Bright Younng Brits
I met Miss Young through an new initiative called Brigit Young Brits founded by Lucy Johnston Of Neon Birdcage.Lucy Invited me to be one of the first featured creative star profiles at Bright Young Brits which premiered at the end on last month.

BYB is a new digital publishing/exposition platform celbrating the work of visonary and talented young creatives across the uk around 10 diciplines of art,architecture, craft, photography, fashion, film , digital design,3D design, literature and performance! Chrsitne and I spoke to an invited guest list at the infamous Hospital Club.I twas an excellent eveing where we heard the stories of other young brititsh talent making their way to the top...you can read a little more about it here..

I had the honour of choosing an Owl to represent Bright Young Brits Fashion..I chose Blue!

Pop up shop has been brilliant fun and still a whole day left to come down and have a look! It took a good few hours to set up and is an excellent space to recreate my studio space ...I want my own shop now! We have had a great response to the space so far and look forward to seeing more of you soon, the rain has stopped and I am munching my way through some chocolate biscuits and tea so do feel free to join me and stay for a cuppa. A few photos from our trip to Scotland Rediscovered at the ICA in London;plenty of Scottish Fashion, Textiles and stunning models wearing bespoke pieces. A whole host of buyers,journalists and blogger's were greeted with an array of beautiful canapes,cocktails and champers. Caryn Franklin gave an impressive speech about our treasured Scottish textiles that are supplied to various top designers and companies around the world, the show was aesthetically pleasing with its crisp clean lines and elegant mannequins displaying the work of 40 companies and 10 designers all proud of their Scottish heritage and true innovators of Scottish fashion. We also met Fiona Duff project manager from Textiles Scotland. Went down to the Forrest Cafe to check out the venue for Che Camille’s fashion show, above the cafe is a stunning space which features ornate church windows and original floor boards an ideal space for the show on August 8th, more info to follow soon. On the way out I noticed Snip and Sip a unique space offering haircuts with a shot of Vodka! The small venue is decked out in vintage furniture, and very tastefully decorated. It looks like a place form times gone by and is definitely worth a visit. Next haircut will defiantly be at Snip and Sip.

This year was I commissioned to make a wedding dress for Miss Helen J George. The dress was inspired by Helens trip to India where she met her future husband Gavin. The dress combined Duchess Satin, Indian Lace and an Indian Silk Sari chosen by Helen. It was a grand occasion at Wiston House where award winning photographer Peter Prior captured the event.
